How to find wireless network security key (Wi-Fi password)?

Security key (wifi password) is needed to connect to a password-protected wireless network, so you need to have an idea of how to find it (restore it).

Nowadays, wireless network standart becomes so popular. Ordinary radio signal is used to data transferring here. Everyone with WI-Fi adapter can connects to by radio, so it needs to be protected by special password.

Network security key finding algorithm depends on Wi-Fi router connection type and your operating system.

If your computer is connected or you can connect it to a Wi-Fi router by using 8P8C cable (twisted pair), also known as RJ45, your first step in order to know your Wi-Fi password will be getting to your router’s web interface.

Getting to router’s web interface:

  • 1) You need to know address to log in. Usually, there are two variants of address: 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. Also this address is default gateway of your PC. If you don’t know it or how to find it, you should check article “how to find the IP address of default gateway”. There are a lot of router manufacturers and they can use different addresses. The most popular addresses you can find below:

D-Link: 192.168.0.1

TP-Link: 192.168.0.1

ZyXEL: 192.168.1.1

ASUS: 192.168.1.1

TrendNet: 192.168.10.1

Huawei: 192.168.100.1

ZTE: 192.168.1.1

Netgear: 192.168.1.1

Tenda: 192.168.0.1

Sercomm: 192.168.1.254

  • 2) Open any browser and enter address to log into router’s interface (for example, we use 192.168.l.l). You should see a appeared window where you will be asked to enter a username and password to log in.
  • 3) Enter username and password. You should know them. If you don’t know, try following combinations:

username: admin and empty password.

username: admin, password: admin.

username: admin, password: password.

username: admin, password:12345.

username: admin and empty password.

username: administrator, password: admin.

username: administrator, password: password.

username: administrator, password: 12345.

If you can’t log in, you need to read your Wi-Fi router’s manual. Password should be there. If you have some troubles after that, press and hold reset button. Be careful, because if you click this button, previous settings will be reset to factory defaults. After that, try to connect by using specified username and password.

Working with Wi-Fi router’s interface.

In this part of article we would consider process which other devices is different. We use Zyxel Keenetic Lite II, but the most steps are similar.

  • 1) You need to go to Wi-Fi networks and click on the icon below. If you haven’t got icon like this, there must be a tab or link that contain word “Wireless”, “wifi” or “Wireless”.
  • 2) Next, you need to find password (network security key). It can be in tab “access point”. Password field is usually called like “Security Key”, “Password”, “Passphrase” or “Password”.

Attention! Some routers may not display key, but instead show asterisks without chance to see code. Just set a new password and click “Save changes” or “Apply settings”.
